Il progetto è frutto dell’ingegno di Shanell Johnson, il Black & Minority Ethnic Students’ Officer a University College London (UCL). Insieme al Students’ Union dell’UCL, la casa di produzione Doofer Films, società del gruppo Filmgood, ha scritto le parole del rap e prodotto la colonna sonora. Con la regia del directing collective di Amandine Kaya, Georgie Winter e Dom Murgia, ed editato prevalentemente con irregolari stacchi in asse da Kaya e Winter, il clip presenta il problema e la soluzione, utilizzando professori e studenti veri che mimano un rap con la precisione ed il ritmo dei professionisti. Il professore universitario rappresenta la montagna che gli studenti, la voce del cambiamento, fisicamente muovono come metafora per un radicale ripensamento dei pesi nell’insegnamento.“And why is it my professor isn’t black? Only yesterday there was an article in the news trying to understand how we clean up the mess, which nobody read. Re-educate the educators, start again it said. The ‘one year contract’ a disproportionate deal. Our race related legislation says we can appeal. So we’re appealing to the powers whoever they may be. Just open the doors and action the policies. Lazy recommendations going from here to nowhere. A silent stare glares into our face and mostly it’s hard to bear. Faceless apathy barring the achievers, chocolate box prospectuses, who’s pulling those levers? We’re all believers and we all chew the fat. But forget your opinion. We should face up to the fact that…

Business buzzwords, edgeless universities, capturing the dream based on structured inequalities. Psychological violence to the self as we lose our cultural foundation to gain an education. Politicians, please address the situation. We already have the legislation, written on scrolls, inked in pen. It just hasn’t become a realization. Fact is, there’s a lack of black in education. Even with tokenistic equality, we should still remain accountable. Take responsibility, because our presence in the classroom validates our legitimacy. We’re not born with critical consciousness. Remove unconscious bias then we might see some progressiveness. But right now there’s…

Su un totale di 20.000 professori universitari in UK, soltanto 85 sono neri, un’insignificante 0,4%. Una cifra che evidenza la disparità della percentuale di studenti neri, il 6% su scala nazionale. Il clip Just 85 Professors, Be the Change è un appello a creare una petizione online di 100.000 firme, che per legge obbligherebbe il parlamento britannico ad un dibattito sulla questione.
